I hear a lot of people say “I want to write a book, but I don’t have time.”
If I’m being honest, even I’ve used that excuse to myself. So obviously it’s a totally valid excuse. ๐Ÿ’ฏ
Except it really isn’t. Because for most business professionals, you are writing or evolving the content for your book every day.
If you want to write a book that will be a tool to grow your business, that means you’re writing a book about your business. The business you’re working in daily. Everything you do is potentially content.
๐Ÿ‘‰The trainings, or break-out session, or small group talks you deliver? Content for your book.
๐Ÿ‘‰Those content filled social media posts you’re writing for LinkedIn and to post in business groups on Facebook = content for your book.
๐Ÿ‘‰The materials you develop for your clients, the questions you answer on every discovery call, and the knowledge you share with every client? You guessed it: all potentially content for your book.
๐Ÿ‘‰Do you offer free downloads with bits of information as a lead generator? That’s probably content for your book too.
See? You’ve already written most of your book! ๐Ÿ‘
โ–ถ๏ธ The next step is to just start sorting and organizing that content. Even if you aren’t 100% clear on the exact focus of your book, I suggest starting a folder where you can drop copies of existing materials, jot notes after your discovery calls or client calls (or even start recording those calls and then have them transcribed. At that point the book is basically just writing itself.)
โ–ถ๏ธ Then, identify content that needs to be updated or changed, and new content that has to be created.
โ–ถ๏ธ Create the new content, update the existing content and put it all in order and then you’re about 80% done with your book.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Even if you can’t find time for these next steps right now, at least get in a habit of saving your content-full social media posts and recording calls and interviews, so when you ARE ready to start, you have a head start.
โ–ถ๏ธ If you spend a few minutes cataloging and collecting content as you go, you’ll be amazed at how little time it takes to actually write your book.
